Branding & positioning

Branding that starts with positioning, not a logo

Most branding projects begin with how a company should look and never properly answer what it should stand for. That produces attractive work that changes nothing. We start with the commercial question — who you are for, what you do better, and why anyone should choose you over the alternative — and then build the identity that expresses it.

Brand system

Position first. Identity second.

Commercial positioning
01

Who are you for?

The buyer the brand needs to persuade.

02

What do you do better?

The difference worth understanding.

03

Why choose you?

The reason to choose you over the alternative.

Brand system

The identity expresses the positioning. It does not replace it.

The challenge

The problem this solves

Branding is the hardest of our services to connect to revenue, so it is worth being specific about what it actually fixes.

You will recognise the situation if:

01

You look smaller and less established than you are.

02

Prospects ask what you do after reading your website.

03

You keep losing deals to competitors who are not better, just clearer.

04

Your team describes the business differently depending on who is asked.

05

Price is the main thing clients negotiate on, because nothing else distinguishes you.

06

The business has changed considerably and the brand still reflects what it used to be.

07

Materials have accumulated over years and no longer look like one company.

The commercial cost

The commercial cost is real but indirect. Weak positioning shows up as longer sales cycles, more price pressure and lower win rates, rather than as a number in an analytics dashboard.

Brand system

What the work covers

01

Positioning

The foundation. Who you serve, what problem you solve, what you do differently, and who you are not for. This is a commercial exercise before it is a creative one, and it is the part that determines whether everything else works.

02

Brand strategy

How the positioning translates into decisions: what the business promises, what it will not claim, how it behaves, and what makes it recognisable over time.

03

Messaging and voice

The language. What you say about yourself, in what order, and how it sounds. This includes the words your team uses in sales conversations, not only the words on the website.

04

Visual identity

Logo, typography, colour, imagery and the system that holds them together. The test is consistency and recognition, not novelty.

05

Brand guidelines

The rules that let other people — your team, a designer, a printer, a future agency — apply the brand correctly without asking. Without this, an identity degrades within a year.

06

Rebranding

Where a business has outgrown, merged, or changed direction. This includes the migration plan, because a rebrand handled badly damages the search visibility and recognition you already have.

07

Application

Bringing the identity into the places customers actually encounter it: website, social profiles, documents, proposals, signage.

Our approach

How we approach it

Branding is where agencies most often produce work that looks impressive and achieves nothing. Three things we do differently.

01
Outside perspective

We interview your customers, not just your team.

How a business describes itself and why customers actually chose it are usually different. The second one is more useful.

02
Position before design

We write the positioning down before anyone designs anything.

If the positioning cannot be stated plainly in a sentence, no amount of design will rescue it. A distinctive identity attached to vague positioning just makes the vagueness easier to remember.

03
Voice built together

We work with your team on voice, not around it.

You know your market and your customers better than we do. Language that sounds right in one market can land badly in another, so we build the voice with you and test it against people who buy from you, rather than presenting it as a finished artefact.

Our process

How we work

01
Step 01

Discover

Interviews with your team and your customers, review of your current materials, and an honest look at how you compare with the competitors you actually lose to.

02
Step 02

Position

Defining who you serve, what you claim, and what you deliberately do not. Agreed with you in writing before anything is designed.

03
Step 03

Express

Messaging and visual identity developed from the positioning, reviewed in stages.

04
Step 04

Systematise

Guidelines, templates and the assets your team needs to apply it consistently.

05
Step 05

Apply and maintain

Rolling the identity out across the places it appears, and keeping it consistent as the business grows.

Brand measurement

How we measure it

Branding is harder to measure than the rest of our work and we will not pretend otherwise. What can be tracked:

01

Win rate and sales cycle

Win rate and sales cycle length before and after, where you record them.

02

Key-page conversion rate

Conversion rate on key pages after new messaging is applied.

03

Brand search volume

Brand search volume, meaning how often people search for you by name.

04

Description consistency

Consistency of how AI assistants and search results describe your business.

05

Sales-team feedback

Qualitative feedback from your sales team on whether conversations start differently.

Branding FAQ

Common questions

01 Is this just a logo?

No, and a logo on its own rarely changes anything commercially. The logo is one output of the work. The positioning underneath it is what affects whether people choose you.

02 How do we know if it worked?

Honestly, less precisely than with our other services. What tends to change first is the quality of sales conversations, then win rate, then how consistently people describe you back to you. We will agree what to track before we start.

03 Do we need to rebrand completely?

Usually not. Many businesses have a workable identity and unclear positioning, which is a much smaller and cheaper problem. The discovery stage will tell us which you have.

04 Can an agency in another country get our brand voice right?

Not on its own, and we would not claim otherwise. Voice comes out of your market and your customers, which is why our process is built around interviewing them and developing language with your team rather than presenting it to you. Where a market has cultural nuances we do not know, we will say so and bring in people who do.

05 Will a rebrand hurt our search visibility?

It can, if handled badly. Domain changes, URL changes and altered messaging all carry risk. Where we handle both, the migration is planned alongside the work rather than repaired afterwards.

06 How long does branding take?

Positioning work moves at the speed of decision-making, which depends more on your team’s availability than on ours.
